Fighting the family worm disaster with Diatomaceous Earth

d earth worms shutter

Worms. I’m sorry, this isn’t the most enjoyable subject material, but if you’re a mum or dad with  school aged children, you may already be familiar with this unsavoury situation. If you haven’t experienced it in your family yet, it’s time to get informed so that when the problem rears its ugly head you know exactly how to tackle it. I also have some great news on a natural way you can rid your body of these pesky critters before resorting to drugs.

Pinworms, also known as threadworms are the a parasitic worm and the most common worm infection in Australia, the UK and the USA.  Kids are more likely to pick up an infection than an adult, probably because of children’s tendency to put their fingers in their mouths, and you may notice worms emerging in your family when your littlies begin day care and school. An annoying truth of the childhood worms experience is that once a child is infected, other members of their household are also likely to get pinworms unless strict hygiene practices are observed.

Threadworms are spread by children scratching their bottom and carrying the worm eggs back to their mouth with their hands. They can also be spread indirectly through food and dust. The eggs can survive up to two weeks outside the body, and once these eggs are swallowed, they hatch in the small intestine and travel down.

Despite the ugly reputation, a pinworm infection is relatively harmless and can be easily treated.

On the other hand, if you're struggling with any type of pests in your home or commercial area, it's time you get in touch with http://www.thebustersgroup.co.uk/.

What to look out for

Signs of a pinworm in children include

  • Tiredness, or generally feeling “out of sorts”
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Lowered appetite
  • Itchy bottom, especially at night
  • Small white worms appearing around the anus
  • White worms in stools

Home care practices

When you notice an infection of worms, you can help reduce the spread to family members through

  • Discouraging scratching the bottom
  • Keeping everyone’s fingernails trimmed and clean. A nail scrubber is a good option.
  • Washing hands with warm soapy water after the toilet
  • Laundering bedding in hot water
  • Vacuuming the house often to remove eggs

Ridding the body of worms naturally

Diatomaceous Earth is a brilliant first step alternative to over the counter drugs and is something that I personally consume regularly to rid my body of parasites, especially during travel overseas or if I suspect an infection. It’s been very effective in gently cleansing my digestive system. And a clean digestive system is the starting point for overall body and mind health.

Diatomaceous earth is one of the best natural, food based anti-parasitic medications. It works by attracting bacteria, fungi, viruses, pesticides, drug residues etc to absorb them. The hollow cylinder structure allows pathogenic bacteria to become trapped and passed through the body. Larger parasites found in the stomach are actually cut up and killed by the Diatomaceous Earth particles!

Heal_Pack-370x470

My naturopathic grade, Diatomaceous Earth, also known as organic fossil shell flour or as I like to call it Dinosaur powder, also contains 15 minerals that are beneficial to your overall health and wellbeing. With its detoxifying properties, you will be able to absorb these minerals much more effectively!  Being high in silica it has the added benefits of better hair, skin and nails too.

One teaspoon of diatomaceous earth taken by an adult, once a day for seven days, can be extremely effective for killing parasites.

You can simply add your appropriate dose to water or juice daily, preferably before meals. You can even add it to smoothies or sprinkle it on top of your children’s cereal as it’s completely free of additives, fillers, sugars, artificial sweeteners or preservatives! These healthy food alternatives are an excellent way to teach your children how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Many trusted naturopaths like this Toronto naturopath would highly recommend it to all people who want to feel the benefits of a proper diet and the effect it can have on their wellbeing.

Love Your Gut, Diatomaceous Earth is a safe food grade product and of the highest D Earth grade. When using it, be sure to drink plenty of fluids and always consult your health care practitioner when treating children.

    Hi Lee,
I’m going to Africa for 3 months and was wanting to know if you think I should be taking Diatomaceous Earth and how many packets do you think I need.
    Thanks for the info.
    Karen

  2. Julia O'Sullivan says:

Thankyou for this info,Lee. I’m in my 60s, and when we were children ,living on a farm, my mother used to dose us regularly for worms. I take a herbal remedy every now and then. When l suggest to my kids they should dose their children, they think I’m criticising their parenting. My grandmother used to tell my mother it was time to dose the children for worms as we were apparently picking our noses!! So thanks to Nana we were all subjected to nasty stuff on our porridge ! I will pass this info of yours onto my family along with a packet of DE.

    • lee says:

      🙂 lee

    • Kerry says:

I saw your comment and was interested in knowing what herbal formula your mother used in addition to the diatomaceous earth. I suspect my children maybe full of parasites.

      • Paul says:

I’ve been dealing with parasites for a year and a half nothing has worked diatomaceous earth has saved my life I have my life back thank you so much

  3. Nola Robertson says:

Just wondering Lee, is DE kosher,? these fossils what were they when they were alive? they are fossilized what?

    • lee says:

Yes it is Kosher and email me lee@superchargedfood.com and I can send you the certificate. It is fossilised water plants or algae.

      • NomadWizard says:

..nope, DE is NOT plant or algae.
…geez, u sell the stuff and u do not even know what it is…SMH
…does not bode well for ur credibility.

“Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica.”
        http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/degen.html

        • Lee says:

          Thanks for the feedback.

DE is the fossilised remains of algae. You’re right though, it isn’t algae any longer, it’s a mineral and a food. In an effort to keep it simple and inform people that it is vegan (and not animal-based) I can see your point that it’s not completely clear.

        • lou says:

hmmmm, i suppose this is kinda late, and perhaps superfluous BUT… diatoms ARE algae. you weren’t especially nice when you told lee that she (or he) did’t know what she was talking about so i hope you apologized for your own ineffective research. jus’ saying ….

  6. Mandy says:

Lee, just wondering if this is suitable to be used whilst gut healing like your program or GAPS?

  7. Sandra says:

    Hi Lee

Do you do deliveries to UK, please?

  8. Rach McNulty says:

Do you have this stocked anywhere in WA? Thanks

  9. Cathy says:

    Hello Lee

I have just started using DE but I have also drink apple cider, lemon and water in the morning plus a probiotic at night is this all ok I dont want to cancel any goodness!
    Love your books☺

    • lee says:

The good thing about DE is that it helps the absorption of your other foods 🙂 so you can use it to help get the most benefit of what you are eating and the probiotics too. I would take it an hour either side of the probiotics

  10. kira says:

Since a week I’m Healing my Gut and just purchased amorfe DE at my local organic shop in Belgium. Now home, I actually read on the can that it’s an insecticide, consisting of “silicomdioxide” 89g/100g.

Is this the same powder as what you advice to take? The description match what you describe, but like to be sure before taking insecticide.

    • lee says:

      Hi Kira,

I can assure you our d earth is very safe to consume. It is the highest quality food-grade and meets all the criteria set out by Food Standards Australia.

Like salt, d earth has many grades. Salt comes in pool-grade which is dangerous to consume or inhale all the way to Himalayan Salt which is very beneficial to consume.

  11. Amanda says:

Hi Lee- is this safe to take while pregnant?

    • lee says:

Yes it is a raw Wholefood not a supplement but if you are worried it is always best to check with your medical practitioner. Lee

  12. Yulia says:

Could I please have you Brisbane stockists. Thank you

  13. Sarah says:

Hi, is it beneficial for 4 year old to have as a general health tonic for development ? Or do very young children have enough silica stores. If it’s good how often per week and how much?

    • Lee says:

When we’re young our silica stores should be high. If you are looking to boost stores this would help and also it is wonderful for gut health.

  14. Angela says:

cn you give DE to a baby at 15 months

    • Lee says:

      HI Angela,

I can’t recommend giving DE to babies though I know people who have done so. Best check with your doctor. Even though it is a natural food, when it comes to babies its always good to get your doctors advice. Lee

  15. Isabel says:

Why I read on diatomaceous earth : This product is not intended for children under 18?

    • Lee says:

The food grade version in small amounts 1/4 to 1/2 tsp is safe for children but if you are worried it is always best to consult your doctor or medical practitioner.

  16. Nicola says:

Hi… i’ve tried using it to get rid of words in my kids.. the challenge has been getting them to take it even in juice…my question is will it still work if I add it into cooked food… eg a pasta sauce or something like that?
    Many thanks

  17. Anne says:

Hi, would this be safe to give to a 12month old, small dose for short time to help detox heavy metals after vaccinations? If so how much would you recommend and for how long?
    Thanks

    • Lee says:

I would speak to your doctor if you are worried although having said that this is a food not a medicine and 1/4 tsp for 14 days will be sufficient.

  18. Celiana Rodriguez says:

    Hi Lee,

I have a 18 month old boy and I’m suspected he has worms, because he was a good eater and now he don’t want to eat anymore, he has poor gain weight. He’s underweight for his age. So, can i start giving him DE?

He’s 21 pounds, how much and how often?

    Thanks Celiana!

    • Lee says:

Hi Celiana, thanks for reaching out.

Have you consulted a doctor? That would be the first thing to do.

As for the powder, it is safe for young children (it’s a food, not a medication). I’d start with a 1/4 teaspoon. It is a natural way to help worms.

  19. Andy says:

    Hi Lee,

Is DE good for tackling/removing food intolerances (Gluten/Dairy)? Also, should this be taken continuously for months or do we see results pretty soon? Thanks

    • Lee says:

      Hi Andy,
it can help improve the function of your gut so will help alleviate symptoms but won’t necessarily get rid of food intolerances. It’s a food, not a supplement, so it can be taken continuously x

  20. Tarnia Nelson says:

Hi I am looking for other alternatives as I have been struggling for sometime to rid my childrens bodies of worms. Can de kill worms like tape, flukes round worms and hookworms as I read your not specific with what parasites it can erradicate

    • Lee says:

      HI Tarnia,

Personally, I’ve had great success with our powder for kids worms. Also, I’ve read a lot of reports about how good it is for all internal worms. I just don’t have the specific research to back it up.

The best news is that my powder is a food (not a medicine) so it’s worth a try.

      Lee x

      • Crysta says:

Hi Lee I have not purchased your de but I found some food grade in Canada and just wanted to say that you should also recommend it for cats! My 16 yr old cat got roundworms from pigeons! Poor thing, thought I’d let her have a few times of fun on my balcony and scare off the pigeons! But she couldn’t hold anything down, barely even water for two days and constantly having diarrhea or vomiting! So basically on deaths door and the vets missed it when I took her In months before (they just told me to give her a painkiller medication!!).

But after reading a lot, prior to taking her to a vet (emerg is where I took her last time where they didn’t help so I wasn’t gonna take her again)she had all the symptoms of a worm infection.

So 15 minutes after giving her DE..she ran to the bathroom! There was a ton of blood and about 10 worms and possible mold in there! Super gross but I’m so happy I force fed her this de, with a plastic syringe, wrapped in a towel so she couldn’t scratch me! 😅 Now she’s not so picky and takes a teaspoon a day mixed with food like a champ. And she has her life back again…even 3 days later! 💜❤️

  21. Hachol says:

Should you ease into taking it, or just an adult can start right away with a tablespoon?

  22. Tamara says:

Hi Lee, I have two questions: 1. Does DE decrease the effectiveness of probiotics? 2. Does DE kill healthy gut flora in addition to parasites? I make a shake with kefir (probiotic) daily, and would like to add in DE, but I once read not to take it within an hour of taking a probiotic. Do you have any knowledge about this?

    • Lee says:

Hello 🙂 it’s ok to take both. The Love Your Gut Powder separates the good and bad bacteria and keeps the good bacteria (probiotics) on tact.

      • Katie says:

Lee, I have the 100% FRESHWATER DE
Is this the right stuff for myself and my children to mix into the food I cook.
Also can I mix it into Greek Yogurt?
Like the above question I read the same, only to drink it in a glass of water an HR before or 2hrs after eating

        • Katie says:

It is the Food Grade 100% Freshwater DE …What is the freshwater part and did I order the right stuff

          • Lee says:

            Hi Katie,
Yes, our Love Your Gut powder is Food Grade 100% Freshwater DE (other brands may or may not be). They are sourced from previously freshwater lakes, rivers etc. It’s an important distinction. I’m not sure salt water deposits are of the same food quality.

Our powder is a food and it’s safe.

            I hope this helps.

            Lee x

        • Lee says:

Hello yes you can mix it into food. Lee

  23. Lindsay says:

How can I be sure that there is no lead in DE?

    • Lee says:

There are heavy metals in most things although D earth is actually good for getting rid of heavy metals so its ok to take.

  24. Sarah says:

Hi Lee, i am on day 3 of using your DE. I see there is some mixed advice in what you say regarding taking it with a probiotic. In one answer you tell someone to take it 1 hour either side of taking a probiotc but in another answer you say it’s ok to mix into a smoothie with a probiotic. Also, in this thread you say to start with a teaspoon and work up, yet the instructions on the pack say take 1tbl twice a day. I’m pretty confused now, could you please clarify?

    • Lee says:

No problem at all. Some people like to start slowly so I recommend one tsp daily for a week and then one tbs twice a day. You can have up to 1-3 tbs twice a day but most people prefer 1 tbs twice a day. It doesn’t affect whether you take it with supplements or not but personally I take probiotics in the evening before I go to sleep. But you can take this with our without other ingredients. Some people like to seperate it some people like to do it all at once it depends on your preference 🙂 lee

  25. Aida says:

Does this powder work for b.hominis and D.fragilis? Both my kids and I have it…

    • Lee says:

      Hi Aida,

Hello 🙂 I have no specific scientific research on whether our powder works for b.hominis and D.fragilis but we have feedback from users that it helps with restoring balance and good bacteria in the gut and also attracting negative bacteria and parasites such as b.hominis and D.fragilis. We will be conducting research into this in the near future.

      J

  26. Emily says:

Do you ship to South Island New Zealand? If so, what is the cost?

  27. Thank you Lee… I’m in a wormy situation right now and thankfully I have some DTE with me… I have just started taking it again and might need to give it to my toddler. Would you believe I found a worm in my poo and he seems fine. As I live in many weird countries I suspect I co-habitate with many parasitic friends (UGH)… so back on the DTE I go. And I have a friend coming to Bali soon so I will get her to bring me some of yours as I will run out.

  28. Melissas says:

Is this okay to take while breastfeeding?

  29. Portia says:

Hi, my family takes this product. I have tried telling friends to try it for worms but they say Combantrim is easier and works well. Are there any stats or suggestions that the combantrin ingredients are bad for us?

    • Lee says:

Hi, I’m not familiar with the ingredients of Combantrim. I know it is a Pharmacy Medication.

The difference is the LYG powder is a food (not a medication). The powder is not concocted in a lab to target worms though I it works very well. It may not be as effective or fast as Combantrim but I much prefer giving my kids natural remedies to chemical ones if they’re available. It’s just a personal preference.

      Lee

  30. Justine says:

Thank you for all the info! I am so glad to hear it safe for kiddos! I have been searching everywhere for how long yo use this. Thank you for posting 7 days! My question is how often? When you are feeling symptoms? Once a month? I truly appreciate all your knowledge! Thank you for sharing!
    Justine

    • Lee says:

Each day is ok. It is very gentle so it is not an overnight fox. It could take up to 3-4 weeks. Lee

  31. Glory says:

    Hello!
Just found out my 9 yr old has pinworms and came across your site as DE has been suggested to my numerous times. I’m assuming you don’t ship to Canada? Lol. I’m sure I can find a similar product here. Wondering what treatment protocol you used for your own kids? And did it completely eradicate them? If so, how long did it take?
    Thank you 😊

    • Lee says:

Hello, the powder is available in the USA but we currently song ship to Canada. I used the powder for a month and cycled it one month on one month off for three months and it worked well. Lee

  32. Katie says:

Hi! Your guideline for dosage I read was to go by height for children, but adults was recommended a tablespoon. At what height is a child considered an adult, please? (I have a 14yo son who is my height.) Thanks in advance

  33. Kate M says:

Why only 7 days? Can I not take DE continuously? Various parasites have various cycles and I’m afraid only taking for 7 days is not enough. Thank you!

    • Lee says:

Yes it is gentle enough to take it for a longer period. Children can have it for 30 days on and then cycle it so 30 days off. Lee

  34. Aaliyah says:

Are you currently available in Dubai?

  35. reagan mils says:

Hi Lee, was curious does DE go beyond the intestines? I have a parasitic worm infection that I cant seem to get diagnose. Ive been treated for pneumonia for they have reached my lungs. Their in the legs , arms and head. And their most definitely in the thoracic cavity which where it originated. Does DE get into the bloodstream to kills these worms?

    • Lee says:

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is safe to consume. It passes through your digestive system unchanged however it does not enter the bloodstream

    • Naomi says:

Hello, thank you for your really useful information. My 2yo daughter and I have been suffering from threadworms for about three months. The over the counter medication works on the first dose but by the time the second dose is due (2 weeks) we’re pretty much back to square one.
I’ve taken a tsp of DE twice a day for three days now and the itching has stopped. I’ve also given my daughter less than 1/4 tsp over two days and she seems more comfortable.
We’re also using a homeopathic remedy Cina 30c to target any threadworms that may be in the body outside of the digestive tract (ears, nose, bladder). This was also proving slightly effective before starting the DE, and we’ll continue it alongside.

  36. Veronica Wilson says:

Is it ok to take while breastfeeding?

  37. SUNNY says:

I bought DE a couple of years ago and it did not dissolve in liquid
And tasted very earthy when I stirred it in applesauce. I am ready to buy more but now I’m told it does dissolve and has no taste. Why did the first bag I bought not dissolve? My friend just got some and it does. I’m confused.

  38. Heather says:

    Hi Lee
Can you suggest how long to take it for as a adult.
I have rosacea that I trying to treat.
Should I take a teaspoon a day and then increase it and for how long?
30 days on 30 days off?
Can you please suggest a programme for me.
    Thank you.

    • Lee says:

Hi Heather 🙂 for rosacea I recommend one two daily for 6 weeks then let me know how your skin is. It’s ok to use it long term it’s very gentle. Lee

  39. Deb says:

Hello Lee, just wondering on you can take this on an empty stomach?

Also, how long would the kids (7 and 5) need to take DE to get rid of pin worms? We have had worms for 2mths now (combantrin 3 times) and I’m wanting to try a natural alternative but be sure to get rid of them.

    Warm regards
    Deb

    • Lee says:

Hi Deb, Our naturopaths recommend to cycle it, one month on and one month off. You can mix it into drinks or food. It can also be taken on an empty stomach. Kids might prefer it being mixed into something else. (It has no flavour) Lee

    • Lee says:

Hi Deb, our naturopaths recommend to cycle it one month on one month off. You can mix it into drinks or food or have it on its own. Kids might prefer it being mixed in. Although it has no flavour 🙂 Lee

What can I do for my 5.5 month old baby with pinworms? we have treated the rest of my family and are currently taking diatomaceous earth, But I’m not sure what to do for him? The dr said we can’t do anything given his age…. thanks!!

  41. Isobel Boyes says:

Could you add it to a single serving of stew or sprinkle onto a hot meal? I don’t eat a lot of fruit, or smoothies, and it’s autumn now and I’d like to put myself on s course, but within the range of foods I’m eating this time of year. Thank you.

  42. Ella says:

Hi Lee, 5 years ago I was diagnosed with dientomoeba fragilis and I went on four lots of antibiotics at different times throughout the last 5 years but I still unfortunately have the damned bug. Taking those hard drugs was not very pleasant so when I learned about your powder, I thought I’d give it a go. I’ve been taking your powder for 3.5 months and I feel like the itchiness (from the bug) is worse than ever. How do I know if this powder is working and how long do I have to take it for? Thanks in advance

  43. Emily says:

Hi, is DE safe for everyday long term use? Thank you

  44. Lisa says:

    Hi,
I am breast feeding a 7 month old and wanting to take this and give to him to. Is that possible? We both need a good bowel cleanse. Any advice would be great. Thanks 😊✌️

  46. Kate says:

Hi Lee, I would like to give DE to my 4 month old either in solids or mixed with breast milk. Are they ok to take it at this age? I know it’s a superfood and not medicine. I was thinking just 1/4 teaspoon daily. He keeps getting parasites from family which is very frustrating!!

    • Lee says:

      Hi Katie,

I have had alot of great feedback regarding success with parasites but at the moment there is no scientific research.

You’re right, it is food safe and there’s no minimum age cited by Food Standards.

I recommend you discuss with your GP due to age 🙂 Lee x

  47. Diana says:

Can you list the trace minerals in DE? Thank you.

    • Lee says:

      They are

      Amorphous Silica: 89-95% Calcium .407%
      Chromium: .000312% Copper: .000505%
      Iron: .25% Potassium: .107% Magnesium: .138% Phosphorus: .00937 Silicon: .0342
      Zinc: .000754

  48. Sarah Plankenhorn says:

    Hi Lee,
Is there a time in the life cycle of the worm that is better to take DE? Or a time that is not as as effective? Thank you for all your info!

  49. Mel says:

Hi my family is using conbention every week but it stirs the worms up but doesn’t kill them…. would this stuff work?

  50. Theresa says:

How long should “die off” effects last?

  51. Sai says:

It can also be used for dogs. 2 table spoons for large breeds and 1 table spoon for smaller breeds.

  52. Nicole says:

Hi Lee, does this powder get rid of Dientomoeba Fragilis? Nothing seems to kill this parasite 🙁

  53. Abby says:

I can’t take more than 1/2 tsp otherwise it affects my hormones. Will this dose still get rid of parasites?

  54. Carl says:

Hi Lee, it is very kind of you to answer peoples questions, Its very nice.

My question for you is – So I have had pinworms for many years now and herbal remedies by herbal doctors have helped and taken away the worm for some time, but it always manages to come back. And for some time now I have had a pretty good reality on that I have a pinworm nest in the end of my colon, which also causes constipation sometimes, as it hinders foodwaste from passing through easily. So do you think DE will work to get this nest out and if not what would you recommend for me?

    Thank you!

    Best Regards,
    Carl Melander

    • Lee says:

      HI Carl,

The love your gut powder is very gentle but it does help with pinworms and we have had good feedback from others in regards to this. Let me know how you go.
      Lee

  57. Taylor Sherman says:

    Hi!
Just got some DE for my family to use for pinworms. I’m not infected that I know of, just the rest of the household but I am following the same treatments and precautions as the rest of the house to make sure I don’t get them or get rid of them if I happen to be without symptoms.
In previous posts you have said to cycle one month on and one off to make sure the worms are fully gone? How many cycles should be completed? Or would it be better to consume for 60+ days straight?
    Thank you!!

    • Lee says:

Hello Taylor, our naturopaths recommend cycling it for children. Adults can take it ongoing. For children they can cycle it off and on until the infection is under control. Lee

  58. Michelle says:

My son we adopted unfortunately came with a gut loaded of pin worms having researched it I was told he would always have them do you know if this is true as we have been using this off and on for 5years now and I noticed when he is getting bad he drops a ton of weight he has autism and is 22 now but he will always live with us he is 5 ft 9 and ONLY weighed 122lbs I give him this and he weighs 155lbs in less then a month but wondering will he always have these worms and how long do I give it to him when he is wormy?

    • Lee says:

Hello, it is possible to eradicate pinworms. Our naturopaths recommend one month on and one month off for children but as he is an adult he can take it ongoing until it clears. Lee

  59. Kate says:

For adults, do you take the Tablespoon twice a day or just once? Same with kids, is it a tsp once or twice a day? Does this also work for other parasites besides PE worms?

  60. Sabina Schaflinger says:

    Hi
Was wondering about the advice thats its save to put on cereal- ac I read that even the food grade is unsafe to breath- inhale. Thanks

    • Lee says:

You would need to stock your head in a bucket and breathe in for a long time for it to be dangerous. It’s fine to sprinkle on cereal 🙂

  61. Jerri-Lynn says:

Hello, my dog, son (who sleeps with our dog) and myself all have the strongyloides pinworm ! UGH!!! Will DE take care of this type and what about eggs on surfaces, bedding, carpet etc.? Thanks for any advice! I’m desperate! 😩

  62. Alisha Moore says:

Hi, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease 7 years ago. I used all kinds of things including diatoumasous earth. A lot of the symptoms are gone but I still struggle with energy and a constant hunger. When I take de it makes me so hungry!!! I have been able to keep my weight down but it has been frustrating always craving sugar and Hungry. Do you have any suggestion for my appetite. Also, how long do you think it will take if a human has a bad parasitic problem for De to work?
Also, I only take a very small amount due to how hungry I get.
    Blessings,
    Alisha

    • Lee says:

Hi Alisha, I haven’t heard of hunger from DE so this shouldn’t make you hungry. It best to include protein foods with your meals that help control blood sugar level. With your energy levels, I suggest taking DE with a vitamin C drink. The Vit C helps release the iron which could help with fatigue.

  63. KRM says:

I wish I had seen the 1 month on, 1 month off advice. We took 2 doses of Pyrantel Palmoate, 3 weeks apart (was supposed to be 2) along with 9 out of 10 days on DE for me, and about the same for my daughter. We also cleaned the house well, and I had garlic clove suppositories a few times and downed raw garlic and ginger. 3.5 weeks later and I did the flashlight trick when something didn’t feel right and couldn’t believe they came back. We are 90% plant based, so I pass stool at least 3x a day. I don’t want to do the drugs again since my daughter is only 2, so I am going to put some in her kombucha, since she loves that. I also read somewhere that it is better to take on an empty stomach, and I used to take it in smoothies. I pray this second time around does the trick, and will stick with it for that full month. I will also be putting de in undies, since it cuts up their skin and they travel outside at night. Mahalo.

    • Lee says:

Hello 🙂 yes that is what our naturopaths recommend. And they said it can be repeated if need be. Lee

  64. SAMANTHA says:

    Hi Lee

I just wanted to say thank you! Myself and children use d.e religiously in our diet, bodycare, in the kitchen, petcare and gardening and have been doing so since 2012.
I found your brand stocked locally last year and were very happy to have it nearby and not have to purchase online because we like to shop local where possible.
Thank you for the work you do, I love how you answer everyones questions and comments, you are doing an amazing job with your customer service 😊
Thats all, no questions, just a comment and a compliment on your wonderful service. Keep up the good work!

Kind Regards & Many thanks 💕

    • Lee says:

Dear Samantha thank you so much for letting me know I am so happy that it’s working for you and your family. That’s the best news! Lee x

  65. katie says:

Hi, we are on our second round of pinworms in our household and I saw that it is recommended for a kid to take 1/2-1 tsp everyday. I was wondering how long we need to do it for, if this is a everyday (lifetime) thing or just a few days and we are finished type thing. We are also on our second round of PinX which clearly didn’t work the first time. I am definitely trying to figure out if there is anything else that is better than taking medicine for pinworms. Thank you so much for your help, the two days that we have taken it my kids have not complained at all.

    • Lee says:

Hello our naturopaths recommend 1/2 tsp daily for one month then stop for one month and repeat again if necessary. Lee x

  66. Janet says:

    Hi Lee
Do you ship to the UK? If so how long is shipping. Thanks for any info

  67. Rachael Moore says:

    Hello Lee,
I just have a question on the dosage. I have seen a multitude of answers, as I have read the article as well as all the comments. Are best practices for children still 1/2 a tap per foot of the child’s height? In the article it states 1tsp for a child 2ft tall and 2tsp for a child 4ft tall. That equals 1/2tsp per foot. But in the comments I’ve seen up to a 1tsp a day, then only that said only up to 1/2 a tsp a day. We have been fighting recurring pinworms for a few years now ever 4-6 months. All the doctors have recommend is the over the counter meds. I would like to try DE as my 5year old also suffers from headaches and is the primary person getting the worms. I’m wondering if there are other things at hand as well. I have talked with our GP and have gotten no help. We recently switched pedatritions, so I will call and try to get help from them as well. But clarification would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for all you do!

    • Lee says:

Hello 🙂 for school aged children it’s 1/2 tsp daily for one month on and one month off. Under school age I would check with your doctor. You could try 1/4 tsp per day. Lee 🙂

  68. sabrina says:

To consume orally, how many times a day would you recommend and for how long? Daily, one week, 2 weeks, etc?

    • Lee says:

For adults Daily for four weeks and then see how you are. But it is gentle so you can take it on an ongoing basis for gut health 🙂

  69. Hannah says:

Does DE kill parasites in blood and organs other than GI tract? Thank you.

  70. Louise says:

    Hello,
My 4.5yr old daughter bites her nails,?sucks her thumb and currently attend kinder. She keeps getting worms every 2-3 months. Would you recommend using this product as a preventative and if so how often would you take it?
Look forward to hearing from you.

    • Lee says:

Yes is very gentle also. Just 1/4 tsp daily for one month and then a month off and repeat is what our naturopaths recommend for that age.

  71. Maxi Frohloff says:

Is it safe as a flea prevention for cats or not recommended? There are conflicting responses in relation to inhalation and cats groom themselves, so not sure. I know you are not a vet. Thanks

  72. Meri says:

Can me and me kids take this the same time as combantrin? Giving this a go aswell as my daughter keeps getting reinfected with worms.

  73. Sarah says:

    Hi Lee,
We have been using DE as a cleanse for worms (my 2 yo had them), but then after one month I continued having 1 tablespoon/day in my smoothie, as it seemed to be helping with my hair loss. I do seem to have a side effect of loose bowel movements and sometimes even stomach cramping. Is this normal with DE, or is it a sign to just have a break from it for a while? Thank you.

  74. Wendy Haxton says:

In one response to a question about threadworms, you say that an adult should take one tablespoon per day, and in another that 2 tablespoons is the correct dose. Which is it?

  75. Shane says:

I am very grateful that you reply to your followers . And I have to be a bother but I have a rather large family and we need to do a parasite cleanse . Ages range from 40- 11months & 2weeks.
I’m most curious as to how to dose my 6yo, 4yo ,and almost One year old . I’m not interested in utilizing the drug or antibiotic measures. Have you ever used DE in a child of a year old ? And if so … what was your dose/regimen like ? I’m simply looking for some sort of rubric for any guidelines that I am to set . I was thinking 1/8th tsp or less perhaps in bottle & 1/4tsp for the elder children … 7 days on and 7 off ? coupled with Oil of oregano on bottoms of feet & regular papaya juice ? 🤔 would you be so kind as to share your areas of expertise? Thank you

    • Lee says:

Hello 🙂 Yes our naturopaths recommend that would be ok for 6 and 4 year old. For the one year old please check with your medical practitioner. Hope this helps 🙂 Lee

  76. Jan says:

Hello thanks in advance for an answer.

What is the maximum table spoons DE allowed per day?

    • Lee says:

Hello 🙂 You can take up to 6g (3tbs/0.2oz) that is a loosely packed level TBS if its heaped tbs two max per day.

    Thanks in advance

  79. Danielle says:

Can you please share how to take for a 7 year old and a almost 3 year old?

    • Lee says:

for the 7 year old our naturopaths recommend 1/4 tsp daily for one month and then one month off and repeat if necessary. I would check with your doctor for children under 6 years 🙂 Lee

  80. Bernadette Couve de Murville says:

    Hi Lee,

I’ve been following the directions in the article for dosage of my family for a week now. For pinworms: Adults 1 tablespoon a day. My two foot high 5 y.o. two teaspoons twice a day and my one foot 2 y.o. one teaspoon twice a day. I’ve just read all the questions and your answers now and I see the doses you are recommending are changing constantly. Why is that please? I understand I should cycle month on, month off for kids and adults can take it continuously, that advice seems to stay fairly constant. Can you please also clarify the ideal doses I should be giving the kids and the maximum amounts they can have per day?

    Thank you very much,

    Bernadette

    • Lee says:

Hello, I recommend 1/4 tsp for kids under 6, 1/2 tsp for kids 6+ one tsp for older kids. For adults anywhere from 1 tsp per day when starting out to 1-2 tbs per day. Hope this helps,
      lee

  81. Meri says:

I have my one tsp of de in my coffee once a day sometimes twice. Is it ok to have it everyday? Cause I do try to have it regularly.
And can I give it to my 5yr old and 10 yr old continuously everyday for good gut health or do I need to start and stop it for kids

    • Lee says:

Yes its gentle so having it every day is fine. I would give it to your children as 1/4 tsp if using everyday.

      Lee

Can your diatomaceous earth be found in Canada British Columbia?

  83. Lauren says:

Do you think this would work for helping with strep that’s inside the body ?

  84. Sarah says:

Hi, I have been using this product for almost a week and I was just curious as to how long it would take to help with ridding of pinworms or how long it would take to see any progress made? I was also curious if it caused any side effects or if it could sometimes since it’s a good and not a medicine? Thank you so much!

    • Lee says:

HI Sarah, it depends on the person and the severity of the infestation, but generally it takes a month to assist with it. There could be some small die off symptoms such as feeling tired or low on energy. 🙂 Lee

  85. Melissa southerland says:

Where can I get this DE in the U.S. state of Georgia? What can I rid my house with as far as cleaning. I find these wieid things in my house and when I Google them it always says it’s a parasite or worm. Plz help me I’m wits end.

  86. Sarah white says:

    Hi Lee,
I have recently been bitten by a mosquito which left larvae in my lips. The doctors has not helped me. They don’t even know how to help me. I’ve been going through this for two years now. It’s changed my life dramatically. I use to model and because of this situation I can’t. I’ve become so sad that the doctors won’t just do surgery because they don’t want to scar my lips or face. It’s to the point where it’s gotten big enough to travel from my lip to mg ear to my temple which is now causing headaches. I feel like I’m on the verge of dying soon. I’ve lost tremendous amount of weight dieting trying to kill it and I’ve even brought products online and nothing has worked because it’s in the lips not the Intestines. Do you think this can help me. I think I have Gongylonema pulchrum!

  87. Kitt says:

    Hi Lee 🙂

So much information! You are very knowledgeable – thanks for sharing with all of us!

My question is does DE work for roundworm too?

    Thanks 🙂

  88. Milton says:

hi I went to your website but could not find the DE for pinworms? Also I am taking Albendazole which does not seems to be helping, can these two be taken at the same time. your prompt response is needed thanks!

  89. Darlene Taylor says:

Dear Lee, have you ever heard of a parasite called ‘rods’? Do you know if DE is helpful in treating dogs infected with them? My daughter’s dog has been peeing blood for a couple of months, and the stuff the Vet gave her didn’t work.

    • Lee says:

People have used this successfully on animals/dogs but I am not a vet so don’t have the knowledge for animals (just clinical nutritionist for humans 🙂

  90. ttp says:

Hello. Stumbled on your site for obvious reasons about pinworms and using DE. Your article and the response to some of your questions are confusing. You mentioned to take 2 tsp of DE on kids 4ft ft, but in another question and answer response, you recommend 1 tsp for kids that size only once per day. Just want to make sure to get it right when it comes to dosage for kids.

    • Lee says:

Start with one tsp once a day. Then see how they go and up it if you need to.

      • ttp says:

I tried your suggestion for using DE on my 7 year old for one month (1 tsp) stopped for about a week and a half and now he’s complaining of his rear itching again, so now I’ve reintroduce 1 tsp(per day). I wanted to do the one month on and one month off but he is complaining of the itching again. Have you heard of this? How long can kids take it for? I’ve been taking it with him too just to see if it has any benefits for me that I would notice.

  91. Mary says:

Yucky question… firstly thanks for all the info – so interesting. Kids brought home pinworm (yay) now I have them too. Had them for 5 weeks without let up! I have tried all of the OTC meds available here and now taking black walnut and wormwood plus your DE daily. Ive also cut all added sugar, diary and wheat. Eating pleanty of fish, nuts, seeds, veg :-). Note I have only been using your DE for 1 day. I have 2 questions…

    1. Have you heard of people being resistant to OTC meds? I am in cleaning frenzy and even wearing single use gloves to bathroom etc. (crazy LOL)
    2. Do you have any advice for fighting pinworm migrated to lady parts?

Desperate for help as the GPs are bleeeeeeeping useless!
    Mary

    • Lee says:

Hello 🙂 so sorry to hear this. Yes I have heard anecdotally from people that they have become resistant to PTC meds. You can also use the d earth topically as well. 🙂 Let me know how you go. Lee x

  92. Kirsten Straley says:

    Hello!!

I was wondering if there was any locations in KY or OH that has this product? Was trying to get my hands on it as quick as possible before committing to ordering online 🫠

    Thanks in advance ❤️

It’s very rare that you find something that works exactly the way that it says it does and diatomaceous earth does just that

  94. Juliet says:

Thank you for all this great information. Pretty sure I have some parasites (over burdened) I did start on a low dose (1/8th teaspoon once a day) of DE (food grade) but I got bad detox symptoms, what do you suggest to help with the symptoms of detoxing, I have activated charcoal, NAC and psyllium husk capsules. Which would be best and when do I take it. Much obliged 🙂

    • Lee says:

Hello 🙂 I wouldn’t try anything with Lee at the moment just do the love your gut powder every 2 or 3 days instead of daily 🙂 Lee

  95. Maria Musselman says:

Intake silver orally 3 x per day . Can I take DE as well at a different time of the day ?

  96. Pam says:

Hi! I have a question I think you can answer, my apologies if you already answered it. Are there any products you recommend taking alongside DE to help with die off effects? Thank you!

    • Lee says:

Hello, thanks for your question 🙂 I recommend the fulvic humic concentrate and the Love Your Gut Synbiotic to help the process 🙂 Lee
