Family Hub Organics Vegan Food Wrap Review

Written by Lee on . Posted in Cookware & Appliances, Ingredients, Natural Products, Reviews

If you’re trying to hop aboard the plastic-free train, Family Hub Organics is your next stop!

Family Hub Organics is a family-run business from Perth in Western Australia, a place where I grew up and love to visit. They hand-craft a range of products that make sustainable and conscious living easy and affordable. This includes Beeswax and Vegan Food Wraps, organic soaps and body products, organic lip and perfume balms and all-natural laundry cleaners suitable for very sensitive skin. Literally a sensitive person's salvation!

In fact, their slogan is: Simple. Natural. Ethical. If that’s not something you want to get on board with, I don’t know what is. All of the ingredients they use are sourced ethically, as they don’t support environmental devastation, slave or child labour situations or poor working conditions.

Their Vegan Food Wraps, made of all-natural ingredients, are definitely what sold me. Next time you’re wrapping up an avocado, you’ve got to try it - aren't they the cutest? They’re made of vegetable wax, tree gum and jojoba oil and yet, are a fabric-base. These wraps are reusable, washable and even compostable but they last up to 12 months if you give them proper care.

They’re an amazing alternative to single-use glad wrap; something I would love to see phased out of our kitchens.

If you’re keen to save money, and save the environment while you’re at it too, these wraps are your new go-to! They even make for the perfect gift.

Get ready to avoid food waste, reduce your carbon footprint and add some colour to your kitchen. I’ve received the Vegan Food Wraps – Starter Set which includes two pieces that are 1 x 23cm x 23cm wrap, 1 x 30cm x 30cm wrap at only RRP $24.95.

I absolutely love them and can't wait to buy more!

Have you ever used food wraps? What do you think of them?  Feel free to let me know in the comments section below.

ACURE Organics – Skin Care

Written by Lee on . Posted in Natural Products, Reviews

I think we can all agree that different foods and ingredients have different impacts on our bodies. Foods like bananas provide us with carbs, potassium and vitamin B6 that all work towards boosting our energy levels and putting a spring in our step. But, while other ingredients like caffeine seem to offer the same energy benefit, they actually end up causing stress to the body and hormones.

While we may be familiar with which ingredients and foods are best to help our insides function ideally, sometimes it is easy to forget to give the outside of our bodies the same care.

A lot of skin care products available are made up of chemicals, pesticides, synthetic colours, and fragrances that eventually age and damage our skin. If we look after the inside of our bodies by steering clear of processed ingredients, alcohol, sugars and junk food, shouldn’t we do the same for our skin?

We should love AND take care of the skin we're in, so it only makes sense to use natural skincare choices.  ACURE Organics is a family owned company founded on sustainable principles to provide the highest quality natural and certified organic personal care. They only offer products that have pure, simple and effective ingredients in order to help your skin and hair perform at its best.

One of my favourite products is their all-in-one Flower Balm. It is an absolute essential that easily fits into a purse or tote and can be used anytime on any area that needs a little extra moisturising. With organic argan and borage oils, this balm is soothing, calming and protective for the skin. Perfect for these cooler winter days that leave us chapping at the lips and drying out in the wind.

ACURE organic products are 100% vegan and free from parabens, sulfates, silicone, harmful preservatives and nasty chemicals. While they keep out all the bad stuff, what I really love about their beautiful range of products is that they are full of amazing goodness. They're made with pure essential oils and plant-based natural ingredients like aloe vera, argan, rosehip, pomegranate and more. This means they’re high in antioxidants to protect our skin from damage and premature ageing.

Their face mask from the Radically Rejuvenating range is made with a blend of ingredients like moroccan red clay and marshmallow root which are formulated to help your skin become livelier at any age. I know what you’re thinking...there must be a catch though, right? Organic skincare that is based on natural plant science helping your skin to stay youthful...must be some sort of sorcery or at the very least probably way, way out of your price range.

Well, unlike other skin care brands that promise flawless and ageless skin with a wave of a wand and half your life savings, ACURE is actually affordable and super reasonable with their prices. You can get biocellulose face masks from $5.99, fragrance-free body lotion from $8.99 and rejuvenating eye cream from $16.99!

If you’re not already buzzing to buy all their goodies, just wait until you get a whiff of them. From naturally scented coconut towelettes to floral and fruity balms, ACURE’s range will leave you like a bee to a flower...with healthy, wholesome skin and some change left in your pocket!

Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods

Written by Lee on . Posted in Food & Drinks, Ingredients, Reviews

My hemp...my hemp, my hemp, my hemp...my lovely little hemp,

On my salad or in my smoothie, check it out!

While hemp seeds may not be the black eyed peas, they sure do have a lot to sing about. Ok, ok enough of that. I don’t mean to drive you (or the brothers) crazy, but I’m still a little shell-shocked at how such a little seed can carry so many benefits!

Hemp is no doubt a supercharged plant. It has an abundance of uses including food for humans and animals, clothing, skin care, construction material, plastic alternatives and more.

As a food alone, hemp seeds can be used in a variety of ways and offer us a lot of nutritional value. With endless possibilities, they can be eaten with salads, cereal, smoothies, porridge, eggs and more. These versatile super seeds are rich in fatty acids and protein. They include all 10 essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce naturally and are necessary for robust health.

Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods appreciate the power of this amazing plant and aim to sustainably bring the highest quality hemp seeds from the field to your table. From shelled hemp seeds to hemp protein and hemp oil to hemp milk, they offer a huge range of delicious and nutritious edible hemp products.

Their shelled hemp seeds or Hemp Hearts are ready to eat straight out of the packet and have a yummy nutty flavour. Although they are little, they have 10 grams of plant-based protein and 10 grams of omega-3 and omega-6 per 30g serving (which is more than an equivalent serving of flax or chia).

It doesn’t matter if you’re a savoury person or have a sweet tooth, Manitoba Harvest offer their Hemp Heart Toppers in a range of flavours. Their coconut and cocoa mix is delicious sprinkled on top of yoghurt for a healthy dessert. While the onion, garlic and rosemary mix works really well on top of eggs for brekky or homemade soup for lunch!

Since these super seeds tasted so great on food, I wanted to see if they worked well in drinks too. I tried the natural Hemp Hearts in a golden gut latte...both me and my tummy were delighted at the outcome! (I’ll post the recipe below so you can try it too.)

Whether it’s after a workout or #meatlessmondays, for those needing that extra protein boost Manitoba Harvest have specifically formulated protein powders that are completely plant-based. There’s no more need for the tummy turning whey and soy protein powders. By simply adding a serving of their Hemp Protein or Hemp Protein Smoothie into water or a drink of your choice, you can get up to 20 grams of protein without causing any trouble to your tummy.

With such a diverse and delicious range of edible hemp products, Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods are great at empowering such a little seed to shine so bright and become more accessible in the mainstream food world.

Golden Gut Hemp Latte (Serves 2-3)

Method:

  • Gently heat milk of your choice in a small saucepan on the stove
  • Blend the Hemp Hearts into a fine powder
  • Once the liquid is warm, add the powder and Golden Gut blend and honey and bring to a gentle boil
  • Simmer for 3-5 minutes and serve in your favourite mug while hot!

Four Sigmatic Mushroom Elixir’s Review

Written by Lee on . Posted in Food & Drinks, Ingredients, Natural Products, Reviews

Today, we’re talking about shrooms.

No, definitely not those kinds of shrooms!

We’re talking about medicinal mushrooms.

Medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries to increase energy, boost brain function, rev up metabolism and strengthen the immune system. They’re also great for relieving stress and aiding sleep. They're basically the new kale.

Four Sigmatic is a mushroom superfood company who are on a mission to make mushrooms cool again. I know what you’re thinking, *sigh*, another superfood product. While some products are great in theory, they often taste gross and are hard to implement into everyday life. Four Sigmatic have created a deliciously easy way to incorporate these powerfully potent and often overlooked superfood mushrooms into your everyday life. Get ready to upgrade your elixirs, hot chocolates and even your coffee, because these mushrooms are coming at you with a purpose!

Four Sigmatic use a blend of functional mushrooms like chaga, reishi, cordyceps and lion’s mane to create beautiful and delicious products we all can enjoy. While some of you may be mushroom ninjas, I know not everyone has mush-room for facts and figures, so I'll gently guide you through what mushrooms are special and why they're so good for us.

Chaga, also known as the King of Mushrooms, is famous for its medicinal properties. It’s been used since the 17th Century to help guard against several diseases because of it's high antioxidant properties. It’s also highly alkaline to help balance the environment within our body. The next mushroom, cordyceps is extremely famous in Asia and is actually known as a sacred treasure. Cordyceps help produce energy and can even assist our adrenals and stress hormones. Lion’s Mane is another medicinal mushroom that's well-known in traditional Chinese medicine. It's a great booster of brain health and can help to increase cognitive function. Reishi, the ancient and well-studied mushroom, is great for balancing our adrenal system and relieving stress. Phew!

Four Sigmatic is founded by the Finnish Funguys, a small start-up company which I love. They’re the most fun-guys around! They’ve created their very own Elixirs, Mushroom Coffee and Mushroom Cacao. My personal favourite is the Mushroom Cacao. After all, just a spoonful of cacao helps the medicine go down! Their Mushroom Cacao is a smooth and creamy dark chocolate mixed with warming cinnamon and cardamom. It works as an adaptogen to help relieve stress and boost the feel-good hormone known as serotonin. It's the perfect treat to satisfy chocolate cravings and serves as a great afternoon pick-me-up.

If you’re a coffee drinker, the Mushroom Coffee will help boost your brain and energy, without the usual coffee jitters.

If you're keen to make some medicinal mushroom magic, just dissolve one packet into a cup of hot water, mix it into a smoothie or even add it to raw slices. Hello deliciousness!

Four Sigmatic use the highest quality ingredients which have been wild-picked or log grown. All of the products are organic, vegan, paleo and don’t contain additives, gluten, lactose, white sugar or soy. Everything is 100% safe and tested rigorously.

Acure Organics Travel Pack and Cleansing Towelettes

Written by Lee on . Posted in Natural Products, Reviews

A common theme around wellness is that we are what we eat.

If this really were the case, I’d be a kale omelette with salmon and avocado... which I’m perfectly okay with!

But this had me thinking; how does this philosophy apply to the skin we are in?

If we feed our skin with a bunch of chemicals, pesticides, synthetic colours and fragrances – what’s our poor skin going to look like in the long run?!

I don’t know about you but I’d rather my skin look fresh and vibrant like a punnet of berries than a chemically-operated science laboratory.

There's no denying that we all feel our best when we consume healthy food, so when it comes to our skin, the same rules apply.

ACURE Organics is a product range that’s pure and driven to provide you with the best and most organic experience possible. The brand is loved globally and is the #5 natural skin care brand in the US.

Unlike many organic brands, ACURE Organics has an incredibly diverse range of high-quality skin, hair and baby products that are gentle on the body and won’t break the bank.

All of their products are free from gluten, mineral oils, parabens, sulphates, harmful preservatives and artificial colours. However, ACURE Organics is so much more than what they exclude in their products – it’s about what they put in. Their products are made from pure essential oils and plant-based natural ingredients. This means they’re high in antioxidants to protect our skin from damage and ageing *insert collective cheer here*!

ACURE Organics uses powerfully potent nutrients that are good enough to eat. They've created a Certified Organic Curoxidant Blend as the foundation for each product, and it's food based and features acai, pomegranate, blackberry, rosehip and rooibos – I'm getting hungry just thinking about it…

They're also leading the way with plant-stem technology, figuring out how to isolate and amplify a plant’s benefits up to one thousand times their natural bioavailability. This is revolutionary in the tech world!

All of their products are pH balanced to match our skin’s natural acidity, helping to prevent damage. Everything is toxin-free and not tested on animals. One of the other things I love about ACURE Organics is that they're a sustainable brand that uses green packaging, recycled materials and biodegradable ingredients and packaging where possible.

By buying ACURE Organics, you're not only helping save the planet, you're also supporting charity. With every purchase, you're also supporting two wonderful charities – Unite for Her (a non-profit breast cancer support organisation) and Turning Green (a student-led sustainable movement).

Their new on-the-go product line makes beautiful travelling that much easier. The ACURE Organic’s travel pack combines a mini 30g size of their hydrating shampoo and conditioner, brightening facial scrub and day cream. The travel pack's a great idea if you’re scared of committing to big bottles and want to test it out for yourself first! They're so easy to pop into your toiletry bag and travel with.

They’ve also created biodegradable towelettes which are vegan, sulfate-free, paraben-free and cruelty-free. These towelettes contain glycolic and zinc to clear the skin of dirt, grime and oil. You can choose your destination when it comes to their smell - either clean your face and body with Fragrance Free or, my favourite, Coconut + Argan Oil (because who doesn’t want to smell like a tropical island?).

ACURE Organics  offers high-quality, and effective organic products for low prices. Could you ask for anything more for the health of your skin?

Mr Perkins Wellness Cleanse

Written by Lee on . Posted in Ingredients, Natural Products, Reviews

I'm not sure about you, but I don’t love the idea of a fruit juice cleanse. After day one, I often feel deprived, lethargic, cold from all the juices and a little bit moody!

I'm a big believer in eating with the seasons so sitting by the fire-place and shivering whilst sipping on a pineapple juice for my 'health'. It just doesn't make sense to me!

That's why I was thrilled when I found out about Mr Perkins' new Wellness Cleanse.

Mr Perkins, the latest health hub in Bondi Beach has a philosophy that I really love and try to live by myself – ‘cooked slow, served fast’. They turn the idea of 'fast food' on it's head with that one! Everything they serve is made in-house daily with locally sourced and fresh ingredients. Think hearty soups in winter and delicious smoothies and beautiful salads in summer.

They've just released their official cleanse which is completely plant based, rich in fibre and designed to help heal and promote wellness. The cleanse is designed by Mr Perkins’ resident nutritionist, Jessica Rutledge, from the Greenery Clinic.

Unlike many juice cleanses on the markets, Mr Perkins Wellness Cleanse acknowledges the seasonal changes and knows we don’t want to be drinking juice for dinner all winter long! It includes juices, smoothies, soups and broths to keep us satisfied whilst promoting detoxification. The body requires nourishment and warmth to maintain our wellbeing and this is what Mr Perkins does so well!

The cleanse allows us to step away from foods that are often inflammatory and, emphasises the goodness of vegetables, fruits and seeds.

If you’ve never done a cleanse before, don’t worry – it’s suitable for all levels. It works for people who’ve never touched a detox in their life to the juicing ninjas among us.

You can experience either a one-day, two-day or three-day cleanse depending on you.

Not yet convinced?

I’m giving you a sneak-peek into their delicious menu below!

Start the day off with a green smoothie, filled with avocado, banana, coconut milk, spinach and spirulina. This smoothie is energising and just delicious!

For lunch, you can enjoy a mineral-rich Shiitake broth filled to the brim with vegetables.

Need a pick-me-up? The Strawberry Gazpacho aids detoxification and is bursting with fresh flavours. It’s the perfect afternoon treat.

Now for dinner: their Green Soup with broccoli, leek, coconut milk and cumin is a real winner!

I love the Berry Chai Parfait for dessert. It’s a wholesome way to end the day, helps promote detoxification and is full of antioxidants and healthy fats to keep us going.

Ingredients

VGN  DF  GF  RSF

Almost too yummy to be healthy, and the ultimate brunch, here is the perfect green bowl, fit for a goddess.

  • 15 g (½ oz/½ cup) shredded kale
  • 6 broccolini stems
  • 10 green beans
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra
    to serve
  • 1 heaped tablespoon Pesto (see below)
  • 300 g (10½ oz/1½ cups) cooked quinoa
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • 45 g (1½ oz/1 cup) baby rocket (arugula) leaves
  • 1 zucchini (courgette), shredded or spiralised
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds
  • 1 tablespoon pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped spring onion (scallion)
  • a few basil leaves
  • pinch of Himalayan salt
  • pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 lemon wedges

Method

Fill a saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Have a bowl of iced water at the ready.

Add the kale to the boiling water and blanch for 30 seconds, then remove with tongs and refresh in the iced water, to stop it cooking further.

Add the broccolini to the boiling water. Leave to boil for 1 minute, or until just tender, then remove and add to the iced water.

Blanch the beans in the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and add to the iced water.

Drain the blanched vegetables, then chop the kale and beans and set aside.

Warm most of the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the pesto, spreading it over the pan. Stir in the kale. Add the remaining olive oil, then add the broccolini and beans, stirring briefly. Stir the quinoa and lemon juice through, then remove from the heat.

Divide the rocket and zucchini among two serving bowls. Drizzle with a little extra olive oil, then top with the pesto-tossed greens.

Top with the avocado, sunflower seeds, pepitas, spring onion and basil. Sprinkle with the salt and pepper, add a lemon wedge to each bowl and enjoy.

Pesto

  • 115 g (4 oz/¾ cup) pine nuts
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled
  • ¾ cup basil leaves, loosely packed
  • 25 g (1 oz/1 cup) rocket (arugula) leaves
  • ½ teaspoon Himalayan salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) mild-tasting olive oil

Place the pine nuts in a food processor and pulse until large crumbs form.

Add the garlic, basil, rocket, salt, pepper and lemon juice. Pulse until just combined. Add the olive oil and process until smooth. The pesto is best made just beforeserving, but will keep in the fridge for a day or two in an airtight container, covered with a layer of olive oil to stop the basil discolouring.

Keep your Teeth Naturally Clean and Sparkling + Tooth Care Product Reviews

Written by Lee on . Posted in Natural Products, Reviews

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-2-14-49-pm

Dental care is something that is sometimes overlooked but should't be!  Your mouth is the main gateway between the environment and your body. Taking good care of your pearly whites takes much more than bi-annual dental visits. To avoid bad breath, gum disease and to maintain overall good oral hygiene, you need to be taking care of your teeth daily and the best way to do it is naturally.

So, how do you go about keeping your teeth looking like a scene out of Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts does a hair flick to reveal a flash of her mega-watt smile; revealing a super white and sparkling grin?

Here are some suggestions for natural dental products that’ll help to get your smile camera-ready and perfect for dazzling friends, family and total strangers…

drTung’s Toothbrush will completely transform the way you think about oral hygiene. While regular toothbrushes clean off some plaque, they often leave a build-up of bacteria in certain areas which can lead to gum disease, cavities and yellow teeth! DrTung’s Ionic toothbrush, brushes away plaque molecules, leaving your teeth clean, your breath fresh and smile sparkling.

drTung’s Floss is a gentle floss that’s clinically proven to remove up to 55% more plaque for a superior clean. It is extremely easy to use, soft on your fingers (so no more finger lines!) and has a delicious natural cardamom flavour, one of my favourite perfumed spices. The floss is made of natural plant and bees wax coating, the container is made with EcoPure and the product isn’t tested on animals, so you can keep both your teeth and the planet super clean!

drTung’s Tongue Cleaner. Why not scrub your mouth clean with this easy yet effective tongue cleaner? It glides on your tongue and removes harmful bacteria, even getting all those hard to reach places! drTung’s Tongue Cleaner is the top choice of dentists and health experts and I certainly can see why. In fact, it’s 5x more effective than tongue cleaning with a normal toothbrush! Tongue cleaning has been talked about in Ayurvedic practices and is said to remove ama (or toxins/bacteria) that accumulate. From an Ayurvedic perspective the removal of ama enables you to enjoy and taste your food even more. Cheers to that!

drTung’s Oil Pulling Solution. In ancient Ayurvedic texts, oil pulling is recommended as part of a daily routine to strengthen teeth and naturally draw toxins out of the body, improving both oral and overall health! I use it daily and love it. It’s a recycled, cruelty-free product made of over twenty-four botanical ingredients, including sesame oil, to detoxify your body, prevent stained teeth and maintain overall balance. Read more about drTungs here.

My Magic Mud Whitening Tooth Powder is a revolutionary product that whitens teeth and improves oral hygiene, leaving teeth clean and polished. This powder is completely natural, made of only activated charcoal and clay, so it’s flavourless and perfect to clean the teeth of all ages. It does get a bit messy to handle so I would recommend using it in the shower. You can find out more about it here.

OneWorld Ayurvedic and Yoga Retreat, Bali

If you’re looking for an experience beyond a handful of cheap sarongs and Bintang tanks, Oneworld Retreats in Bali may be just the ticket. Veering off the beaten track in Ubud the Ayurvedic Detox and Yoga retreat is located at Kumara, a centre which has been transformed by it’s vibrant and larger than life owner Claude Chouinard into a haven of relaxation surrounded by positive energy.

As soon as you arrive, the smell of frangipani fills the air and you’re offered a thirst-quenching welcome drink that tastes like it has only just fallen from the large coconut tree positioned beside the reception area. The pool is glistening and you are ready to jump in.

Once checked in, you’re guided down a set of stairs to reveal a gorgeous private room which instantly makes you feel comfortable and at home.

The accommodation is lush and traditionally minimalistic, each room having a large balcony overlooking Ubud’s green fields for an instant eye-popping nature-fix.

There are no televisions in the room but instead you’ll find water colours, paper and brushes, you don’t need to be an artist to get creative, it’s all about amusing yourself as a way of focusing on being in the NOW. There are also tools for mandala creation, incense sticks and pretty local flowers for mandala making.

A table and comfortable sink-into arm chair on the deck offers a cozy place to kick-back and relax, a tempting hang out area, particularly as the sun goes down, as you listen to the low hums, buzzes and chirps of the native wildlife.

In the morning, the aroma of Bali offerings and incense still lingers in the air, and a piping hot teapot with aromatic herbal blends arrives on your deck at rooster o’clock. It’s a welcome pick me up as you stumble out of bed, before ambling down the steps to the magnificent locally built yoga shala, complete with jungle backdrop, to salute the sun at a morning yoga session.

Wayan brings a unique teaching style to the yoga classes and has a gentle approach and nature which is soothing and nurturing.

The retreat is run by Dr Aparna and Dr Joshi who are experienced Ayurvedic practitioners from India. They are excellent facilitators and do a wonderful job in bringing Ayurveda to guests in an accessible way.

During the retreat you will partake in workshops which cover living the Ayurvedic way, principles and dietetics, daily rituals and also an introduction to the Panchakarma detox or PK as it is affectionately known. Each day is dedicated to an element, which allows you to appreciate, honour and become more aware of the earth, water, fire, air and space around you.

Do Go Chasing Waterfalls

Just beyond Ubud, Balinese worshippers have been gravitating towards Pura Tirta Empul which translates to Temple of the Holy Water, a place where the sacred springs are said to hold healing properties.  For centuries and still today, Balinese have been bathing and praying in the holy water. Oneworld Retreats offer you the chance to immerse yourself in this ancient ritual and leave with a lighter spirit and sense of peace.

After the bathing ritual we’re given a front row seat to a further purification situation, where a holy man presses rice on your forehead and secures pretty little flowers into your hair. You’re offered a cotton bracelet and instructed to wear it until it falls off.

What I loved about the retreat is that it feels like the real Bali, one that is steeped in rituals and where you are constantly engaging in the glorious rich culture.

Take a walk on the wild side

Pack your trainers for an approachable adventure into village life. We joined our guide Tokok, a Balinese local for a pied-piper inspired single-file walk through narrow rice paddy fields stopping as women rode side-saddle on motorbikes and a passing parade of smiling drivers carefully navigated the slim pathways.

Not so squeezy!

Weathered farmers in straw hats waded knee deep through water-logged rice plots anticipating their next harvest.

The sound of frogs and smell of rice and frangipani invaded your senses. I loved the look into village life that the nature walk provided.

During the Ayurvedic retreat you are given daily tonics, an Ayurvedic consultation with the doctors and two detoxing treatments which leads on to a fully supervised Ayurvedic detox day.

The day is a good opportunity to have a stay at home day as it involves taking Ayurvedic preparations and then staying close by a loo! The doctors monitor you every hour to make sure everything is running smoothly!

During the special detox day a digital detox is also recommended which serves as the perfect time to channel your inner Van Gogh utilizing the art supplies and flowers for creative play.

Throughout the retreat you’re tempted by beautifully crated Indian and Indonesian inspired dishes. This is paddy to plate eating at its best.

The retreat showcases local ingredients with generous amounts of flavour and freshness.

Food always tastes better when made with love. Whether it's from the passion the cook has for it or from the love for the people it’s being created for. Each mouthful becomes even more pleasurable when love is involved.

Julia Turshen’s new cookbook Small Victories is full of wholesome yet exciting meals made from such moments. Revealing and laughing at her own cooking mistakes, turning them into useful tips, Turshen encourages you to overcome the daunting and stressful task of making a meal. To find enjoyment in the ‘small victories’ like not dropping any celery on the floor when first learning to sauté, or turning ice cream that wouldn’t freeze into a dinner party milkshake hit.

Small Victories has a humble quality, from Turshen’s expert but easy-going guidance, to its focus on utilising good, fresh produce that is accessible to most home cooks. With a few ingredients and flavours included to help broaden your pantry and excite your tastebuds, Turshen takes away the angst of having to find and buy these ingredients if you don’t have them, by providing effective alternatives.

Out of milk? You can still have pancakes for breakfast (or dinner)!  Try out the ‘Sour Cream Pancakes with Roasted Blueberries’ recipe from the book, which I Supercharged by using a Turshen alternative of buttermilk rather than sour cream. By the way if you’re dairy free coconut milk would be just as nice!

This book is Turshen’s outstretched welcome into her home kitchen, with beautiful nostalgic photography and personal stories, and every turn of the page is filled with the essence of her love for food and cooking.

The other wonderful thing about Small Victories is that you don't need to be an expert to enjoy it; if you're more of a "one recipe kind of a cook" the book features creative ways to reuse recipes, turning your single mastered meal into a multitude of delicious moments.

Small Victories is a great introduction to food for new cooks because it gently takes away the seriousness of getting it right and finds laughter and pleasure in your ‘small victories’.

My first stop was the Sour Cream pancakes and I made a couple of supercharged switches using buttermilk in the recipe which I'm sharing with you here.

Buttermilk Pancakes with Roasted Blueberries

  • 1 ¼ cups (160g) blueberries, rinsed and drained
  • 3 Tbsp coconut sugar
  • ½ cup (60g) oat flour
  • ¼ cup (30g) sorghum flour
  • 1tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) Buttermilk or coconut milk
  • Coconut oil for cooking and serving

Preheat oven to 200°C

In a baking dish, combine the blueberries with 2 Tbsp of the coconut sugar and stir to mix.

Place in the oven and roast, pulling the baking dish out a few times to stir the blueberries, until their skins burst and they have released lots of juices, this takes about 20 minutes.

Using a fork or a potato masher, crush the berries a bit so that they become jammy. Set aside.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the flours, baking soda, and salt and whisk to combine.

Crack the eggs into a medium bowl, add the buttermilk and remaining 1 Tbsp coconut sugar, and whisk until the mixture is uniform. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and use a wooden spoon to mix everything together. It’s okay if the batter isn’t perfectly smooth – it’s better to under mix than over mix.

Set a large cast-iron pan, or your largest frying pan over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp coconut oil. Once the oil melts, swirl the pan or brush the pan to evenly coat the surface.

Pour the batter into the pan using a ¼ cup (60ml) increments to form pancakes that are roughly 10cm in diameter, cook only as many pancakes at a time as can fit comfortably.

The minute that pancakes become too precise is the minute they become no fun, so don’t stress over this – it’s okay if they’re not the same size. Cook the pancakes until small bubbles appear on the surface and the undersides are nicely browned, 1 to 2 minutes.

Flip the pancakes over and cook until the second sides are nicely browned, another minute or so.

Transfer to warm plates and continue making pancakes, adding more coconut oil as you go, until you’ve used up all the batter.

Serve pancakes immediately, with more coconut oil on top and the warm roasted blueberries.

SPIN-OFFS  You can use coconut milk, buttermilk, sour cream or even yoghurt.

SHAKE UP THE TOPPING ROUTINE by roasting just about any fruit in place of the blueberries (berries are the most jammy, but all fruit benefits from the concentrated caramelisation that happens in the oven). Roasted blackberries, sliced bananas, sliced peaches, and thinly sliced apples or pears are all really delicious. Or rhubarb! Just keep an eye on the fruit while it’s roasting, as some types (e.g., apples) take a little longer than others and some (e.g., sliced bananas) take not much time at all.

THE ROASTED FRUIT TOPPING IS VERY VERSITILE; serve it with coconut cream for dessert, on toast spread with goat's cheese for breakfast, or on waffles for any time. Stir it into yogurt. Or serve alongside or grilled rich meat like pork shoulder or pork chops. Or lamb! Lamb loves fruit.
